Tax Filing Deadline for 2008 Taxes

October 15th marks the IRS tax deadline for filers with an extension on their 2008 tax returns. One more time in 2009, taxpayers who haven’t filed will crowd the post office lines to mail in their return. Although the tax extension deadline does not seem to carry as much weight as the deadline in April, it is just as significant for those who filed extensions earlier this year and have yet to file their actual return. Late filers without extensions are already accruing interest and late penalties.

If you fall into this population, it would be to your advantage to file before the tax extension deadline otherwise the IRS may void your extension and/or charge you penalties. The IRS has even stated they are willing to work with filers who are unable to pay their tax balance and that it should not be the reason to further delay the filing of their 2008 tax return. Arranging an affordable payment plan with the IRS that works with your budget is quick and easy after your return is filed.

Filers who are waiting for the very last minute to file should keep in mind their 2008 return must be E-Filed by the Thursday evening, October 15th, 2009. Paper filers must have their return postmarked by 11:59PM of that evening so that it is considered timely filed.

After the October tax return deadline, 2008 returns can no longer be E-filed to the IRS. Filing after this date will require taxpayers to sign and mail their returns.
