Check out how you can find the progress of your state tax refund for this tax year.

Check the status of your state tax refund online

For all our kvetching, the IRS is *usually* pretty good about sending out tax refunds in a timely manner. In other countries, Australia for example, it’s not uncommon to hear of people waiting 20 or even 30 weeks for their tax refunds.

But state tax refunds can be different from the IRS. They often arrive well behind your federal tax refund which, depending on your perspective, can constitute either be a pleasant surprise or an agonizing wait. If you haven’t file your state taxes yet, you can do so (along with your federal taxes) on PriorTax.

Here’s how long you can expect to wait for your state tax refund and how to check its status:

  • Alabama state refund – With your social security number and refund amount you can check your refund status on the Alabama Department of Revenue website.
  • Arizona state tax refund – Arizona e-filers can expect their refunds in 15 days and paper filers in 12 weeks. If you’re curious about the status of your refund, head over to the Department of Revenue’s online tool.
  • Arkansas state refund – Slightly quicker than other states, Arkansas claims it can get refunds from e-filed returns out in 10 days and 6-8 weeks for paper returns. Still burning to know where your refund is? You can check its status here.
  • Connecticut state tax refund – Connecticut’s super speedy Department of Revenue Services claims to get refunds out to e-filers in 4 business days and to paper filers in 10-12 weeks. You can check the status of your refund here.
  • Idaho state tax refund – Idaho e-filers can expect their refunds in about 4 weeks and paper filers in 10 weeks. In the meantime, the Idaho State Tax Commission allows you to check your refund online.
  • Illinois state refund – The land of the man who introduced income tax to the United States promises you your refund in 15 weeks. You can check on your Illinois refund here.
  • Kansas state tax refund – The normal processing time for paper filed Kansas returns is 16 weeks. E-filed returns should take somewhat less time. You can check your refund’s status here.
  • Kentucky state refund – E-filed Kentucky refunds generally take 7-10 days and paper returns 8-12 weeks. Check the status of your refund here or  Kentucky has a number, (502) 564-1600, that you can call.
  • Louisiana state tax refund – The Louisiana Department of Revenue estimates that refunds should get to e-filers in 7-10 days and to paper filers in 12-16 weeks. You can check the state of your refund with this online tool.
  • Massachusetts state refund – An e-filed return should get you a refund in less than a week, a paper return in less than 3 weeks. You can check the status of your Massachusetts refund online here, after you create an account.
  • Michigan state tax refund – In Michigan it can take up to 2 weeks for the state to get e-filers their refunds and up to 6 weeks to get paper filers their refunds. You can check your refund’s status here.
  • Minnesota state refund – Expect it to take 35 business days for the state to get you your refund if you e-filed and up to 90 days if you paper filed. Minnesota taxpayers can check the status of their refunds here.
  • Mississippi state tax refund – Mississippi taxpayers who e-filed a return can expect their refund in 2 weeks, 8-10 weeks if they paper filed. You can check the status of your refund online.
  • New Jersey state tax refund – New Jersey allows you to check the status of your refund online. Be warned, paper filers, your information won’t even be available in the system for 6-8 weeks. E-filers, on the other hand, can expect their direct deposit in 1-2 weeks.
  • New York state tax refund – New York allows you to check on your refund here. New York gives paper filers a target of 6-8 weeks, with e-filers getting refunds faster.
  • Oklahoma state tax refund – You can either call the Oklahoma call center at (800) 522-8165 in-state toll free or use their Taxpayer Access Point to check on your refund.
  • South Carolina state tax refund – You can check on your SC refund here. South Carolina estimates that paper filers will get their refund in 3+ weeks and e-filers in as little as 12 days.
  • West Virginia state tax refund – You can check the status of your WV refund here. West Virginians will have to wait 8 weeks for a refund from their paper return. They’ll wait 3 weeks for a refund from an e-filed return.

There’s no doubt that waiting for a state refund is pretty frustrating, especially when you need the refund money.

Your link for Dealware’s tax refund to submit a refund inquiry…is not a Delaware link. It is the connecticut link….so you have two conecticut links…list. And no delaware link at all. I’ve clicked on both the CT and the DE link…and both are for Ct

    • admin says:

      Hi VLB,

Thanks for pointing out our mistake! The correct Delaware link has now been inserted into the post.

I have been going through a divoce for 3 years now and recently found out my husband did not filed 2008! I just submitted in July, any chance the IRS would understand my situation?

    • admin says:

      Hi Mai,

It’s unlikely that the IRS will still let you claim a refund from 2008. You could try calling them, but I doubt they will accept it. You did have three years to file, after all.

  6. LORA says:

i never recive my tax 2011 and the status for my refund seid this messenger .
Your GA State refund has been issued.

My boyfriend and I efiled our taxes the first day allowed. We received our federal taxes over a month ago. Why hasn’t our louisiana state refund been deposited yet?
We have called and they continue to give us the run around. I’m getting VERY irritated with them! It should have been deposited by now! Why Are they taking almost 2 months!?
Also, the latest person we spoke to said that they don’t update the website often. And that it has been processed. So why is it that 14 days after being told its been processed have we not received a penny?

  9. Melissa says:

IRS refunds can only be claimed for up to three years…what about State Tax Refunds (Alabama)?

    • admin says:

      Hi Melissa,

I’m not 100% sure. Generally states follow the federal rules, so I think you should be able to get your AL refund for up to three years, but the best thing to do is probably to call them and confirm.

  10. Lisa says:

My complaint is with the State of Kentucky! Yea it’s no problem to call the 1-502-564-1600 number to get the satus of the year 2012 but, Why don’t they have a number to push to ask about past years filings, like for 2011 and 2010?!!! It pisses me off Severly! I know about my 2012’s an yes they’ve been recieved. But they could get off their butt’s an give a little more info for previous year’s of 2011 and 12, the only person I’ve gotten ahold of to speak to gives the “programed answer of: ” We are not as staffed as the Federal gov’t so therefore you will be waiting at least twice as long for your refund.’ What a Bunch of Bull S***, cause we recieved our 2012’s (both Fed. and State) with in 10days of filing!! It’s now 04-07-13..If that’s the way Ky. State Gov’t. knows how to use a calculator, I’m sorry to be a Ketuckian!! Seriously Wait till Election Time dear Governor…

  13. Dana says:

I filed 6 weeks ago and at week 3 was told I was manually reviewed and its done we are waiting for deposit date. Week 4 I was told not manually reviewed but still waiting for deposit date and they don’t know why its not done. Week 5 same thing. This week “oh deer you should have gotten this by now, this is strange. We will have to investigate why you didn’t get your refund. Please wait 4 more weeks while we figure this out.” Then after they figure it out it may take 2 to 6 weeks being a total of 12 weeks for a normal e filed return.

  14. five weeks and counting says:

E-filed March 14th. Received Federal a few days later. Still waiting for Louisiana and Wisconsin. Check their sites and see it has been accepted and is processing. Is the online information all that is available?

  15. Portia says:

Electronically filed Missouri taxes. It has been 6 weeks. I go on line and it says they have been being processing my claim for at least 4 weeks.

    • admin says:

      Hi Portia,
Sorry to hear that, that doesn’t sound fun….I would suggest contacting the State Of Missouri Taxation Department to ask them for an update on the status of your return.

  16. suz says:

here’s a crazy one for you. filed an amended state return for 2009 in sep 2013/following a complicated refund i filed for & received from the IRS in 2013 for 2009. The states auditors are apparently still reviewing it but will not cooredpond with me. I’ve been able to get reps on the phn say its in review. its been 12 months!! and its a lot of $.

    • admin says:

      Hi Suz,

I suggest calling the state finance office that you filed for and asking what the next step would be. You could also contact whoever prepared your return to ask them what the next step would be.

  17. ️Mel says:

My Michigan return was filed 2/8/14 along side my federal return. My federal return was direct deposited today; but when I go to check my Michigan return it says that my return was chosen for manual review and the estimated completion date in 5/31/2014. Thsy seems unreasonable. Especially for such a small return. Does anyone know if it will take that long!

    • admin says:

      Hi Mel,
Oh no- that’s not fun! I would suggest reaching out to Michigan’s finance department to learn more. They may be able to provide you with more information.

  18. Maddie says:

I received my Ohio refund but not my federal. I filed online and requested direct deposit. Why didn’t both deposit at the same time? Where is my federal refund?

    • admin says:

      Hi Maddie,

This is not unusual and although a bit annoying, you have little to worry about. Although you filed your state and federal tax returns at the same time, both are processed through different entities. One is processed via the state of Ohio while your federal return is processed via the IRS. Since there are a great deal more tax returns flooding the IRS e-file system right now, you can probably see why your federal refund is taking a bit longer to get to your bank. Although you cannot digitally check your state tax return status, you can check your federal using the IRS’ “Where’s My Refund” tool.

  19. Sadie says:

We e-filed our taxes on Feb 6th and we received our federal return within two weeks. It has now been over 3 weeks since our GA return was accepted and the website still says there’s no record of our return?

    • admin says:

      Hi Sadie,

Each state works slightly differently with their updates. However, on their website, Georgia states that you should receive your refund within 2-3 weeks. Since that time-frame has passed, I suggest contacting them directly about your state tax return. You can find the contact details HERE.

How do i check my refund status for Arizona income, my main address is in maine with zip code 04062 and anytime i input it on the arizona status refund it tend to say invalid zip. what do i do

  21. Rita says:

I filed my n.m taxes and it says that it’s been approved and issued I guess they haven’t released it… Does n.m have a specific day that they deposit refunds do they have a schedule

    • admin says:

      Hi Rita,

Unfortunately, there is no concrete schedule. However, most states will provide you with a date they are issuing the refund. Keep in mind, also, that if you chose to have your refund direct deposited, your bank plays a role in the release of your money. It could take up to a few days (on your bank’s part) to actually clear in your account.

  22. jenny says:

I filed my taxes on the 30th of January it says state comes back in 7 to 10 days I haven’t heard anything on the websites it still just says approved but not long does it really take?

    • admin says:

      Hello Jenny,

Sorry to hear about the delay. We advise you to consistently check your “Where’s My Refund” tool on your state department of revenue website to determine where in the process your refund is. State refunds are delivered within eight weeks if your return is not under additional review. However, each state department of revenue processes refunds on different time-frames.

  23. Nina says:

The state of Wisconsin Department of Revenue says that my refund should be deposited today, but it has not yet. Can it be deposited at any time of day and it just hasn’t come yet, or is it delayed because of an issue?

    • admin says:

      Hello Nina,

Each state department of revenue’s time frame for processing refunds works differently. We advise you to allow additional time for your refund to be delivered and if you are still having difficulty, please check your “Where’s My Refund” tool on your state department of revenue page or contact them directly.

  24. Denise says:

2016 Arkansas refunds are delayed, due to newly implemented procedures to detect and reduce identity fraud.

My return was processed 2/2. AR’s where’s my refund site is not supplying an expected deposit date yet

    • admin says:

      Hello Denise,

We are sorry to to hear about the delay. Since you are experiencing difficulty locating your state tax refund status, we advise you to call your state department of revenue to check on the status of your state refund. Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with further information since each state varies on how they review and deliver your refund. Since you have indicated they have implemented new procedures, additional reviews of returns and refunds will occur which increases the time-frame of processing your refund.

Perhaps your bank information was incorrect. Verify your bank information on the tax return and contact your state department regarding your disbursement.

i live in pa and i checked wheres my refund status and it finally told me the amount but there’s not deposit date. Do you know how long it takes after that point?

    • Manisha Hansraj says:

      Hello Stacy,

Every state is different when it comes to your state refund. Typically, it takes 4 weeks for your return to process after e-file. When paper filing your return, the tax return process takes 8 to 10 weeks. The process of delivering your refund takes an additional 3 to 4 weeks for your refund to be mailed or direct deposited.
